Paintings: Chair Open, Closed, Guest Bed, Shopping Basket, Caution, 2001
These are all depictions of objects that in reality fold flat, in the process collapsing two layers of grids onto each other. The process of painting/ representation makes that collapse formal as well as functional. These paintings seemingly capitulate to the Flatness of Painting and the modernist grid that supposedly underlies all spatial organization, but in fact they seek to unfold in the mind and become sculptures with vertical and horizontal planes.
