Media Baskets Labor here enters a conversation with the canonical interpretation of the readymade, which is that the ready made is a challenge to the obligation of the artist to hand produce her work and to the idea of the inherent autonomy of art from everyday life. With many other contemporary artists I have rethought some of these categories in my work. I have often worked with objects that have my own labor and the original labor embedded in them. Examples would be Film (basket woven with film) and Sound (basket woven with audio magnetic tape) that are homages to the craft of basket weaving especially in the third world from which Pier One imports them, through the use of high arts such as cinema, video and classical music.
