Guise, Method/Madness, Pretext, Excuse
These works announce through their very titles that they are strategies, subterfuges, tricky and duplicitous sculptures that pretend to be abstract while they're representational, valueless while they are handmade, trash masquerading as art, positives made out of negative space.
They are a series of wooden sculptures imitating Styrofoam packing shapes, I call them "abstractions with an excuse." They are re-fabrications in wood of existing objects, yet when divorced of their function they foreground their formally abstract qualities while also making solid (and valuable) the negative space that Styrofoam represents. |
